how can i potty train my yorkie puppy?

November 15th, 2008

i have had my yorkie puppy for about 4 or 5 months and she is STILLL not potty trained!! for the first month or so we would take her outside very frequently until we stopped FINDING her “mess.” we thought she had gotten the hang of it because she would go to the door when she had to potty or she would potty BY the door which made us think she knew to go outside. but lately it has gotten worse and she keeps pottying inside. HELP!!

Whatever you do, do NOT:

1) Let your Yorkie witness you cleaning up her mess
2) Scold her if you haven't caught her in the act

The reasons being:

1) This is what your dogs mother did for her all the time so she could see this as a normal routine and not stop
2) Dogs don't have the brain capacity to understand that something they did in the past can be connected to your reactions in the future.

The best thing you can do is catch your dog in the act and scold her. Then immediately lead her outside (preferably to the same exact spot every time) and allow her to finish. Then reward lavishly.

Be patient and don't lose you temper. All dogs take different amounts of time to learn.

ADD: I cannot stress this enough but PLEASE do not listen to the first answerer! Scolding your dog after the fact will only confuse her! Sorry for calling you out, I just don't want this person to take the wrong advice and make training even harder.

When she poops or pees in the house bring her over to the place she peed or pooped and point to it and say NO! it’s not all your puppy’s fault…actuallyit could partly be yours! Try finding signs that your puppy shows when she wants to go to the bathroom. just be more aware and you’ll do fine!

She’s still a baby and she forgets sometimes. The only formula that works is patience, persistence and repetition and then more of the same. Even though it seemed she had the hang of it, her little bladder and intestines need frequent outings and lost of praise when she does her business outside. Believe me, I’ve potty trained lots of puppies over the years and she will get the hang of it too.

try rewarding her every time she goes to the bathroom outside and as soon as she starts squatting to go put a word to it like go pee or go potty,so then she’ll realize what the word means and when you take her out she knows whats exspected.
Make sure you have a set feeding and watering schedule for her three times a day put her food down and give her ice cubes with enough water to cover only the bottom of the bowl, this way she can get a drink without over doing it.pick the food and water up after 2 hours. This way you have more of an idea of when shes going to go to the bathroom.

If you have an opportunity, take a week or two off work once you get your puppy, to dedicate your undivided attention to the training. This process will require your presence 99% time. If you can’t afford to do that, potty training might take a little longer. But not to worry! If you work through this with patience and love, you’ll achieve the same results in no time. Also remember that different puppies learn at different rates, just like humans learn things differently, so do not get discouraged if the process gets a little tedious. The first thing you want to do is read the clues, and indications that your puppy is ready to go potty. They will usually want to go 10-20 minutes after a meal, a nap, or playtime; and as puppies, they do a lot of each, so you must be prepared at all times and watch your puppy closely. Right after these activities take your puppy outside and try to use the same spot each time. You want them to get used to that spot and be comfortable with it (when they are completely housebroken you’ll be able to change locations). When the puppy is really young, you can use a newspaper as the special potty spot indoors. Each day move the newspaper slowly towards the outside. Once it reaches the door, place the newspaper outside, and eventually remove it entirely.

Do not forget to reward your puppy with a tasty treat every time they go potty. Do it while they are going potty, so they understand what they’re being rewarded for. At times when you are unable to watch the puppy, put them in a crate. It needs to be sturdy and spacious. But do not keep a young puppy in the crate for over two hours because they cannot hold it for that long. This is a better alternative as opposed to letting them outside on their own, because they will not have your supervision, and you will not be able to reward them.

If you happen to catch your puppy in the act, do not lose your temper! It might be your first reaction, especially if the training has not been going well, but control your frustrations and remember that your puppy is not doing it on purpose. He cannot help it, and he will only learn with your help. The best thing to do is to firmly say “No!” and take your puppy to the designated spot outside.

Yorkies are relatively hard to housetrain. I would try paper training when working to potty train this breed.
